Dildo Styles and Types

Written By: Jenne

Your garden variety sex-shop dildos are usually made out of rubber and/or vinyl, but most quality dildos are made out of silicone. Although the silicone dildos are generally a little more expensive, they feel great, as well as being more durable and easier to clean than other materials. Jelly dildos are made of soft, translucent rubbery stuff and come in bright colors. They’re economical and cute, and good for beginners, but can pick up lint. Cyberskin and Ultraskin dildos give a soft, life-like feel, some come with “skin” that moves crewating that I've got balls feeling. They require careful handling, but can be worth it for the realistic sensations. There are also dildos available in materials like glass, stainless steel and acrylic, all of which make for a good hard ummm use your imagination here-)).

All the above said dildos fall into a few basic types and below I've made a short list of these types to help guide you through the often bewidering selection.

Realistic Dildos
Realistic Dildos rate amongst the most popular of all the types on the market today. As the name suggests in general they will look something like a penis, although some of them bear very little resemblence to any guys giggle stick that I've ever seen but... I digress.

If you're looking for really realistic then you have a variety of options and materials open to you. Cyberskin and silicone are probably the best matreials when it comes to achieving that almost realistic feel if that's what you are looking for. Many porn stars are now lending their best assets to the world of dildo making and if you really want to experience John Holmes in all his glory, but without the ego then you can. There are even dildos that are modelled on animal genitalia available although I can't see either Katie or myself testing these in this lifetime.

How realistic you think these dildos are varies greatly from manufactuer to manufactuer. Generally the smaller companies or partisans will create the most life like dildos and one of my particular favorites is the "Realistic" which is pictured above. In general the more expensive the dildo the more attention to detail will have been paid to making it realistic.

Non-Realistic Dildos
Many of the dildos on the market bear no real resemblance to actual peni, and personally I tend to prefer them that way. This type so dildo come in many different shapes, sizes and some extremly funky colours. Many are made from jelly, which has the advantage of being slightly pliable, others are moulded to include ridges for maximium sensation, while others are so far removed from what you would normally consider a dildo to be, they are almost scary. Many of the non-realistic vibes are made specifically for g-spot stimulation, such as the stimulator which is pictured above.

Balls
Technichally balls are dildos because they are not attached to a motor oractually powered by exterior source. One of the most commonly known type of balls are Ben Wa Balls. These consist of two large ball bearings that are designed to be inserted into the vagina where they rub against one another and reportedly cause some intense sensations for some women although others like myself find them more irritating than anything else.

Another type of ball is the duotone ball. Like ben wa balls these are inserted into the vagina but they are made of of a softer substance such as silicone and the ball bearing is inside of the balls themselves. Doutone balls and their variants are generally connected by a cord, which helps make them easy to retrieve, something that is important I'm sure you will agree.

Beads
Beads have a wide appeal and are popular when it comes to anal play. Generally they are a series of silicone, jelly or plastic spheres strung together ona cord. Often the spheres will be graduated, getting larger at one end. Beads are slowly inserted into the vagina or the anus and then gently pulled out, which in turn creates pleasurable senseations.

Anal Dildos
Anal dildos as the name suggests are specifically designed for anal use. The thing that makes them different from all other dildos is that they have a flared base or cord so they don't get lost. It's amazing how many people end up in Er rooms each year with dildos that weren't designed for anal play stuck where the sun generally doesn't shine. If you don;t want to be one of those casualties then make sure you ONLY use a dildo specifically designed for anal play.

Double-Ended Dildos
A double headed dildo is a dildo built for two. Typically a little more than twice as long as a regular dildo, both ends can be inserted. If it is long and flexible enough, you can use it on yourself for both anal and vagina stimulation.

Strap-On Dildos
Some dildos have a suction cup base to be attached to a surface for a solo ride, or to simulate a three-way. Dildos with flared bases can be worn in a harness, although some dildos with balls may not fit. Leather or nylon harnesses work best as they hold things in place better and don’t stretch out like elastic. Plus the leather looks hot. There are dildo harnesses that men can wear that will accommodate their dick and balls and allow for double penetration of a woman. Other harness-type devices allow a dildo to be mounted on the wearer’s face, allowing for a close-up view and oral opportunities.

Bells and Whistles
Other dildo gizmos include dongs with built-in or insertable vibrators, inflatable or squirting dildos, bendable and poseable dildos, even light-up dildos. You name it and someone has probably thought of adding it to the dildo wonderland, just be careful with these type of toys as many are sold simply for novelty value.
